I have to say that the first game of the defending champs did not disappoint. It was a nail biter between the San Antonio Spurs and the Phoenix Suns. I was only able to catch the last two minutes of the second overtime, despite the fact that the Spurs were trailing by 5 points I was pretty confident that they would win it. And win it they did by a score of 117-115.
Trailing by 3 and with a few seconds remaining on the clock. Manu Ginobli inbounded the ball and it was passed right back at him. He curled hard to the basket on a Tim Duncan pick then when Shaq came to help his defender he threw the outlet pass to Duncan. Duncan had all the time in the world to hit the 3 to tie the game. And that my friends was greatness right before me. This guy is a PF and is never known as a 3 point man, yet when it was needed the most he made it.
In the 3rd overtime Parker fouled out so it was left to Bowen to guard Nash. With the Spurs leading in the final seconds, Nash hit the tying 3 in an off balanced jumper. Spurs did the right thing by not calling a time out. They were able to capitalize on the Suns not having Shaq in the middle because the Suns removed him to put more 3 pt shooters on the floor. With the lack of an internal defense, Manu Ginobli just did what he does best by driving hard to the basket and putting the Spurs on top by 2.
Can’t wait for the next game.
